Identifying a Lathe Spindle Nose Chart

Look at the diagrams below to determine what kind of spindle nose you have. Analyze the associated chart, then take the required measurements. Select the spindle nose size for your chuck or adapter plate.

Sort D: Camlock

Camlock pins have a D-shaped cutout in the body. They are used to fasten a chuck to a lathe's spindle. The D1-3 to D1-4 chucks and adapter plates have three camlock pins. Six camlock pins are found in the adapter plates and D1-5 to D1-15 chucks.

When mounting a chuck, a lathe operator inserts the camlock pins into the spindle of the machine, pulls the pins inward to tighten the chuck against the spindle, and then turns a cam within the spindle using a wrench.
