Key Clamping Considerations for CNC Lathes

processing cnc lathe

The machining process of CNC lathes is similar to that of conventional lathes, but due to the fact that CNC lathes perform all turning operations in a single setup automatically, several aspects should be considered:

1.    Proper Selection of Cutting Parameters:

The selection of cutting parameters (such as depth of cut, feed rate, and cutting speed) plays a crucial role in maximizing the machine's potential, optimizing tool performance, and achieving high-quality, efficient, cost-effective, and safe operations. For rough turning, it's advisable to choose a larger depth of cut first, followed by a higher feed rate, and then determine an appropriate cutting speed. This approach helps reduce the number of tool passes, increase production efficiency, and lower costs.

For finish turning, it's essential to focus on maintaining machining quality while maximizing productivity. Therefore, a smaller (but not too small) depth of cut and feed rate should be selected, along with high-performance tool materials and appropriate geometric parameters to maximize cutting speed.

2. Proper Selection of Tools:

  • For rough turning, tools with high strength and durability should be selected to meet the requirements of a large depth of cut and high feed rates.

  • For finish turning, tools with high precision and durability should be chosen to ensure machining accuracy.

  • In order to reduce tool changing time and facilitate tool setting, machine-clamped tools, and machine-clamped blades should be used as much as possible.

3. Proper Selection of fixtures:

  • Try to use universal fixtures to clamp workpieces instead of special fixtures;

  • Ensure alignment of workpiece reference points to minimize positioning errors.

4. Determine the processing route

The machining route refers to the movement trajectory and direction of the tool relative to the part during the CNC machine tool processing process:

  • The processing accuracy and surface roughness requirements should be guaranteed;

  • The processing route should be shortened as much as possible to reduce the tool idle time.

5. The relationship between processing routes and processing allowances

At present, under the condition that CNC lathes have not yet reached widespread use, the excess margin on the blank, especially the margin containing forged and cast hard layers, should generally be processed on ordinary lathes. If it is necessary to use a CNC lathe for processing, you need to pay attention to the flexible arrangement of the program.

6. Key points for fixture installation

At present, the connection between the hydraulic chuck and the hydraulic clamping cylinder is achieved by tie rods. The key points for clamping the hydraulic chuck are as follows: First, use a wrench to remove the nut on the hydraulic cylinder, remove the pull tube, and pull it out from the rear end of the spindle. Then use a wrench to remove the chuck fixing screws to remove the chuck.
